Briwder Kennels
Briwder Kennels is a growing American Akita breeding program focused on producing well-cared-for, healthy, family-ready dogs while continuing to improve with each generation.
Why I started
I started breeding because I developed a genuine appreciation for the American Akita—not just for their appearance, but for their loyalty, presence, temperament, and the unique bond they can develop with their families. Over time, that appreciation grew into a desire to build a breeding program of my own and to give other families the opportunity to experience what makes this breed so special.
What keeps me going is knowing that every litter is an opportunity to improve, learn, and produce dogs that can become an important part of someone’s family. I take a lot of pride in caring for my dogs, watching puppies develop, helping buyers understand the breed, and staying connected with families after their puppy goes home.
I also enjoy the challenge of continuing to grow as a breeder. I don’t claim to know everything, and my program continues to evolve as I learn more about health testing, genetics, structure, temperament, and responsible breeding practices. For me, breeding is not about simply producing more dogs—it is about intentionally building a program that gets better with each generation.
At the end of the day, what matters most is seeing a Briwder Kennels puppy become someone’s companion, protector, and truly a new best friend. That is what makes the work worthwhile and what continues to motivate me.
Our program today
We are still early in our journey and have produced one litter to date, but the program is being built intentionally with a long-term vision in mind. Over the next couple of years, the plan is to remain relatively small, producing approximately two thoughtfully planned litters per year. As our experience, facilities, breeding stock, and overall program continue to develop, we anticipate gradually growing to around four litters per year.
Even at this stage, we want Briwder Kennels to be known for transparency, strong communication, continued breeder education, support for our puppy families, and a genuine commitment to the American Akita breed. We are especially drawn to dogs with strong structure, confident presence, sound temperament, and the distinctive look that makes the American Akita so impressive.
Our goal is not to grow as quickly as possible. It is to build a breeding program that becomes stronger, more consistent, and more trusted over time.
What we do differently
What makes Briwder Kennels different is the level of intention, transparency, and personal involvement we bring to our program.
We are not trying to simply produce puppies. We are building a program centered around healthy, well-cared-for American Akitas, thoughtful breeding decisions, continued education, and strong relationships with the families who choose us.
I believe families should know who their breeder is, understand the dogs behind their puppy, and feel comfortable asking questions throughout the process. I am very open about what I know, what I am still learning, and the steps I am taking to continuously improve the program.
We also place a strong emphasis on education and long-term support. American Akitas are an incredible breed, but they are not the right fit for every home. I want families to understand the breed, know what to expect, and feel prepared before they ever bring a puppy home. That support continues after the puppy leaves us.
Ultimately, I want Briwder Kennels to be known as a program that is approachable, honest, continually improving, and genuinely invested in both our dogs and the families who welcome them into their homes.
Our family
Briwder Kennels is truly a family program.
I oversee the breeding program and the day-to-day direction of the kennel, including breeding decisions, puppy placement, communication with families, education, and the continued development of our program.
Outside of Briwder Kennels, I work professionally in Environmental Health and Safety management and also serve as a pastor. Both roles have shaped how I lead, communicate, serve people, and approach responsibility. Planning, continuous improvement, accountability, and caring for people are all things that naturally carry over into the way I approach our kennel and the families we work with.
My wife, Candace, is also an important part of what we do. She has been one of the biggest supporters of the growth of Briwder Kennels and plays an active role in helping us make decisions, care for the dogs, and continue investing in the program.
Our three sons are involved as well, each in their own way. Caleb is our thinker and problem-solver, Cody is always willing to jump in wherever help is needed, and CJ helps us capture many of the moments around the kennel through photography.
Everyone in our family has responsibilities outside of the kennel, so Briwder Kennels is not our only identity, but it is something we genuinely enjoy building together.
That family involvement matters to me because these dogs are part of our lives, not simply part of a business. As Briwder Kennels grows, I want to maintain that personal connection with our dogs, our puppies, and the families who ultimately become part of the Briwder Kennels family too.
Where our dogs live
Our dogs are indoor dogs and live as part of our family day to day.
They spend their normal time in the home with us, but we also have a dedicated kennel setup on our property that gives each dog a secure, comfortable space with access to individual outdoor areas. We use the kennels for structured time, exercise, separation when needed, and to give the dogs space to relax and enjoy being outside safely.
We interact with our dogs every day through normal family life, play, training, exercise, and individual attention. As our program grows, we continue improving both our home and kennel setup to make sure our dogs have safe, clean, comfortable, and enriching environments.
For us, the kennel is not where our dogs are kept away from the family. It is simply another part of how we manage them responsibly while still allowing them to live as part of our everyday lives.
Briwder Kennels is located in Cordova, Tennessee, just outside of Memphis. We welcome families from across the U.S. and offer nationwide shipping for those outside our area.
